Inspired by the Vogellisi legend, a shy child discovers she can understand the alpine choughs and marmots on the Tschentenalp. The animals guide her across mountain meadows to find a lost healing herb before the first snow buries it forever -- teaching her that the quietest voices in nature often carry the most important messages.
On the morning of the World Cup, a child sneaks onto the empty Chuenisbaergli race course and discovers that each gate is a portal to a different era of Adelboden's history: 1409 when the valley was first mentioned, 1873 when the first tourist arrived at Christian Hari's farmhouse, 1937 when the first cable car rose to Engstligenalp, and 1967 when the World Cup roar first echoed through the valley.
A legend whispered among Adelboden's farmers: a giant once climbed up from the valley to steal the vast Engstligenalp plateau for himself, blocking the water with his enormous hands. A tale of the twelve stubborn men who built Adelboden's church in 1433 against the wishes of the bishop and the monastery, told from the perspective of the youngest builder's child who carried stones up the hill. When the bishop sends word to stop construction, the villagers must decide whether their faith in their own community is stronger than the authority of the distant church.
Set in winter 1943: an Adelboden farm girl befriends a young American airman interned at Camp Moloney, who is far from home and shivering in an unheated chalet.
